Professor Brown has written a new biography of the great German physicist Max Planck for general audiences. In particular, the book focuses on Planck’s personal story, his tragedies that often mirror those of 20th-century Germany, and his legacy in science. The book combines history, science, and personal voices from a different time.
On this night, Brandon will speak about the “heyday” of German physics in Berlin, the epicenter of a revolution in physics that lasts to this day. Scientists including Max Planck and his friend Albert Einstein opened new ways of thinking about light, matter, and the universe itself. They started with simple questions and uncovered possibilities as remarkable as black holes.

“Planck is beautifully written, dramatic, engaging, and completely accessible. … This engrossing and surprising book helps us understand some of the deepest and most fascinating topics in physics, while it also shows how personal relationships shaped the history of science.”
