Venice Biennale artist Angela Su reflects on her practice, blending science fiction with imagining alternate worlds.
Hong Kong-based artist Angela Su reflects on her practice, which focuses on science fiction, speculative fiction, and imagining alternate worlds. In this talk featuring recent videos, Su will delve into the creation of Arise, her presentation at the 2022 Venice Biennale that confronts how to grapple with an ever-changing world. Su recently participated in After Hope: Videos of Resistance, an exhibition and platform exploring the role of hope in contemporary art and activism.
About The Artist
Angela Su’s works investigate the perception and imagery of the body through metamorphosis, hybridity, and transformation. Her research-based projects materialize in drawing, video, hair embroidery, and performative and installation works. Central to these projects are video essays in which she embodies different alter egos, merging reality and fantasy. The artist has also published an artist novel Berty and science fiction anthology Dark Fluid, in which she uses science fiction as a tool for social justice. Su is currently representing Hong Kong at the 59th Venice Biennale and has participated in exhibitions at museums and institutions internationally.
