Dr. Bec Gooley will be speaking about the role of ecosystem liberation in achieving Total Liberation for our animal friends.
“What does it mean to be human? Over the centuries and across many societies, the answer to that question has included the right to dominate all other species and ecosystems, no matter the consequences.” ~David Naguib Pellow
Understandably, a large focus of animal liberation is centered on very direct (and serious) forms of speciesism and oppression, such as, farming animals for ‘food’, animal testing, or forcing animals to perform. Earth liberation or ecosystem liberation has sometimes been viewed as a separate issue, but at the core of both liberation fronts, individual animals are suffering. Environmental destruction, exploitation and poisoning kills thousands upon thousands of individuals each year – and is an important issue to address in the animal liberation movement.
Focusing specifically on pesticides and poisons, Bec will discuss how insecticides and rodenticides harm insects and rats and work their way through the entire food web – impacting many non-target species. She will tell us ways we can all help keep rodenticide out of California (and beyond), how we can help individual animals we suspect have been poisoned, and ways we can advocate for poison-free management systems!
