Event Details

Is your mama a punk? She doesn’t want flowers or a long line at a brunch spot because you forgot to get reservations. Your mama wants to rock out to punk at the beach. And local mom rock band The Audacity will make your mother’s punk dreams come true on Sunday May 12th, 2024 at Winter’s Tavern in Pacifica.

The Audacity ain’t your mama’s cover band. These momsters of rock play punk without the junk, including their estrogen-blessed version of songs by The Dictators, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and other 80s punk, proto punk, post punk and ska punk tracks. Their originals include How Dare We, a tune about crashing through the gates of rock after receiving an unfortunate wrong gate code at Secret Studios in SF. And Next Never, reminiscent of the Waitresses and an answer to the question “When can we see each other again?”

Formed in the summer of 2023 in the East Bay suburban mom towns of Alamo, Walnut Creek, Concord, Lafayette, and Pleasant Hill, The Audacity features:

  • Elinor Davies – the tease behind the keys + vocals
  • Jo Marzan – the bum behind the drums + vocals
  • Cindy Mesaros – one of the racks* on the axe, rhythm guitar + vocals and songwriting
  • Erica Vanlandingham – another rack* on the axe, lead guitar + vocals, songwriting
  • Sarah Zyla – the ass behind the bass (we know that doesn’t rhyme, deal with it) on bass + vocals

All five believe being a mom is the most punk rock thing they’ve ever done.

Davies, Mesaros, Vanlandingham, and Zyla met at the Walnut Creek School of Rock in a break room full of broken crayons while trying to learn Uncontrollable Urge. All four were seeking a reprieve from the monotony of motherhood and careers in the aftermath of Covid and the global life reevaluation it brought about. Finding local drummer punk mom Marzan through a mutual friend, they played their first club show at the Golden Bull in Oakland October 2023. They’ve since played gigs at Hotel Utah, Retro Junkie, and various other venues smelling of stale beer, testosterone and surly soundmen, plus multiple outdoor stages and house parties where they honed their craft. Their tips are often enough to cover childcare for the night, but not consistently.

“We’re used to over-stimulated, screaming and crying humans demanding the same songs over and over while having absolute epic meltdowns, so we feel well-prepared for this new rock star stage of our lives,” said Mesaros.

The band has plans to conquer Marin County and Santa Cruz next, with Cleveland a very distant third.

“We’re all squarely in the second trimester of our lives, which is the most enjoyable trimester,” said Marzan. ”Unfortunately we’re still experiencing nausea pre-shows, but we hope that passes quickly.”

The Mother’s Day Punk Matinee also features Salty, a five-piece all women “moms & groms” band from Monterey playing female 90s grunge, and Unwoman, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and mom Erica Mulkey, who performs with a stand-up five-string electric cello and vocals.
