The Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council (“OCIC”) is extremely excited and proud to announce our inaugural Lunar New Year parade on January 29, 2023.
Lunar New Year is celebrated by two billion people in the United States and throughout the world. On September 30, 2022, Governor Newsom signed AB 2596 into law which recognized Lunar New Year as a state holiday! When Governor Newsom made the announcement, tears, cheers and bells were ringing throughout our state as our AAPI community started to celebrate. Our nation’s past history has included discriminatory laws and policies against AAPI communities, including the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment during WW2. This new law is a giant step forward in bringing attention to our history, and addressing the past wrongs and inequities perpetuated on our communities.

Oakland Chinatown is one of the many communities struck hard in the recent years with COVID shutdown and anti-Asian crimes. Our residents and merchants were attacked physically, verbally, and emotionally, which led to the formation of several Stop Asian Hate organizations to provide assistance and services to the victims of violence. Our AAPI communities are ecstatic about opportunities to participate in positive Lunar New Year events that highlight the power and vibrancy of our communities. Oakland Chinatown is no exception! Please join us and make this event one for history books!
