Oakland Drops Beats is an all day music crawl spanning 12 hours around 10 blocks of downtown Oakland, bringing live music into nontraditional venue spaces, musicians with Oakland’s event producers, and the community with creative and musical engagement on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

There will be a showcase and workshop with YouthRadio, a vinyl swap and live spinning, plus lectures and workshops on Oakland’s musical history.

Oakland Drops Beats is Oakland’s first quarterly music crawl dedicated to bringing more music performance to the Oakland youth and community.

Oakland Drops Beats: Summer 2014

Schedule:

  • Noon to 9 pm: Live Music, DJs and Vinyl Swap – Vamp Music (331 19th St, Oakland)
    • 12-1 pm – Mar de Pop Collective
    • 1-2 pm – Gif Problem (Aaron Oppenheim – Laptop, Sharmi Basu – Electronics, Josh Marshall – Saxes)
    • 2-3 pm – Avant Red (Bob Marsh, classical guitar, Eli Wallace, keyboard)
    • 3-4 pm – DunkelpeK  (Nava Dunkelman (percussion) and Jakob Pek (guitar, miscellany, piano). This Bay Area based duo offers listeners a visceral, syncretic experience of sound and silence.
    • 4-5 pm – Oakland Future Trio (Caleb Sankofa – piano, Ari Carpenter – Bass, Mikhi Woodley – Drums)
    • 5-6 pm Jumbo Sound – an American producer, emcee, writer and sound designer
    • 6-7 pm – Bobby Ganush spins all bay area 45s
    • 8 pm – Special Secret Guests (drums, sax and effects)
  • 1 pm: Music Talk with Emory Douglas and Jennifer Johns – Joyce Gordon Gallery (406 14th St, Oakland)
    • Emory Douglas worked as the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until the Party disbanded in the 1980s.
    • Jennifer Johns is an Oakland-based musician and artivist.
  • 1-7 pm: YouthRadio Showcase – Remix Your Life (1701 Broadway, Oakland)
    • 1-1 pm: Today’s Future Sound and Remix Your Life
    • 3:30-5 pm: Beatmaking workshop with the instructors of Today’s Future Sound
    • 5-7 pm: Calimade Collective (former Remix Your Life students)
  • 3 pm: Panel on Booking & Promoting Shows in the Bay Area – Awaken Cafe (1429 Broadway, Oakland)
  • 6-11 pm: Live Music & DJs (RSVP required) – Imagine Affairs Art Lounge (408 14th St, Oakland)
    Hosted by DJ Oracle with co-host Joseph Okafor. Evening entertainment begins with DJ Oracle selecting tunes, live performances by Dynamatt (story teller) , Soldier of TREE, Miriam Rose, Angel Hair & Coconuts, On The Daily, Wiseproof (“I Love My Live”), Empress Freedom (Street SAVIE Entertainment), and Knobody.
  • 8 pm to 2 am: ODB After Party – Babeland Gallery (184 10th St, Oakland)
    $10 suggested donation or $5 with ODB stamp card, no one turned away for lack of funds

    • Upstairs 8:30-10:30 pm: JELofANTICON & Odd Nosdam
    • Downstairs 10 pm-late: Oaktown Indie Mayhem Presents Dirty Ghosts, Art Nikels, + Rose Droll
