Gihan Abou Zeid, a visiting Egyptian activist, will share her images of Tahrir and discuss women’s experience at the Square. Zeid is an expert on women’s rights in Egypt and the Arab world as well as development politics as they pertain to women and youth.
The still incomplete Egyptian Revolution is arguably the most geopolitically significant uprising so far in the middle east. One of its signal characteristics was the widespread participation of women both in Tahrir and in the organizing of protest. The political diversity of participation in the uprisings was visible in the varying appearance of women in the square, from religious garb to secular dress. Women were also notable targets of repressive violence.
