One year after the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir’s “New Main Stage” pivot to virtual programming during the pandemic, the 35-year organization launches its inaugural World Choir Project this weekend at its biennial Gospel Music Conference, presented virtually via Zoom for participants around the world.
OIGC’s World Choir Project invites performing artists from around the world to sing or perform along with “I Won’t Stop Singing My Praise,” an original song Artistic Director, Terrance Kelly wrote in response to the COVID pandemic to encourage everyone to keep singing in the face of adversity:
“This song has been written for this moment. For joy: these songs are joy. For love: we love each other. For hope: we hope that we’re going to get in the room together in the next six months. From above: that’s where we’re hoping from. For peace: I want world peace, and I will sing my song. I’m gonna sing my praises to God. And that’s the point of Gospel. You take your pain, and you sing it. African Americans sang out their anger, they sang out their pain, they sang it until it turned into joy. This song is written just for all of these issues, you know?”
Performing artists are encouraged to “make it your own” by singing the song in their native language, choreographing a dance, or signing it in American Sign Language. Video submissions are due April 3rd and will be edited together into a music video that will premiere at OIGC’s Annual Free Spring Musical April 24th.
No fees are required for participation in the World Choir Project; however, registration is required for the optional workshops on March 20 & 27 to review the song and answer any questions.
