When National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden fled to Hong Kong in 2013 after revealing documents detailing extensive surveillance of Americans, he contacted film director, producer and cinematographer Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Poitras was already personally familiar with being watched closely, because of a television documentary she made about the U.S. occupation of Iraq in 2006 that landed her on a Department of Homeland Security watch list as a high security threat. Snowden’s initial emails to Poitras were under the pseudonym “Citizenfour”, and the eventual result was her Oscar- and Emmy-winning documentary of the same name.
On Sunday, November 22, PASMC will present a free screening of “Citizenfour” – for those who may have missed its relatively brief run in theatres, or who would just like to get a second look and share thoughts about it with other concerned folks. They will begin their program at 7 PM. The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.
