100th Anniversary of the Panama-Pacific Int’l Exposition (PPIE)

February 20, 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), the World’s Fair celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal and showcasing San Francisco—its recovery from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire and its world trade potential.

Throughout 2015, the PPIE100, a citywide consortium of cultural, civic, and historical organizations, will conduct centennial programs to commemorate the PPIE’s historical significance and to reflect on its legacy.

Stroll the Palace grounds – experience what it was like to be at the Exposition and enjoy a film and light installation by Optic Flare in the Palace of Fine Arts Theater lobby.

The City Luminous multi-projection installation will create a whimsical tribute to the original atmosphere of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. This site-specific installation aims to highlight the innovative lighting illumination from the original PPIE, tell a condensed story of the fair, and imaginatively expand upon these nighttime spectacles.

Optic Flare has collaborated with author Laura Ackley who recently published San Francisco’s Jewel City, transforming her into the Star Maiden, a statue from the PPIE that flanked the Court of the Universe of the fair. In this form, Ackley tells the story of the fair with quotes from her book. Laitala has also teamed up with dancer Jenny Stulberg to provide a tribute dance performance that captured the spirit of pioneer dancer/choreographer/inventor, Loie Fuller, who was at the PPIE and helped raise funds to save the Palace of Fine Arts from destruction in 1915.

Refreshments from local purveyors will be available for purchase.
