100th Anniversary of the Panama-Pacific Int’l Exposition (PPIE)

February 20, 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), the World’s Fair celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal and showcasing San Francisco—its recovery from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire and its world trade potential.

Throughout 2015, the PPIE100, a citywide consortium of cultural, civic, and historical organizations, will conduct centennial programs to commemorate the PPIE’s historical significance and to reflect on its legacy.

Imagine walking through the entrance gates on the night of the opening of the Panama – Pacific 1915 World’s Fair in San Francisco, the sun has just left the sky and the night lights are burning at the fair…

and remembering the devastation, which was just nine years to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and one would be awestruck, standing and taking in the beauty of the sights and sounds, majestically laid out within 635 acres in the Marina district.

One was surrounded by thousands of other fellow fair goers moving about, as over 19M visitors came from all over the USA and the world to witness this incredible event.

SFMTA Photographer Jeremy Menzies, and Photo Archives Aide Katy Guyon collaborated on this project. Christina Moretta is Photo Curator at the San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library. Tom & Jean Moulin- Moulin Studios is a historical archival-quality photography studio. A hundred years later and Moulin Studios has transformed into a one-of-a-kind stock photography studio.
