It’s the time of the year again, when the community starts making their parol lanterns and holiday decor to adorn their houses for the yuletide season.
In San Francisco, on Saturday, December 8, 2018, the community will be holding the 16th Annual San Francisco Parol Lantern Festival. This year’s theme is “A Gathering Of Lights.“
The festival features a parol lantern parade, a gallery of handmade parols, plus live music and dance performances.
16th Annual Parol Lantern Festival and Parade
Saturday, December 8, 2018 | 5-8 pm
Jessie Square, Mission St. & Yerba Buena Ln., San Francisco
A highlight of the evening will be the free Filipino sweets and delicacies, featuring acclaimed chef Francis Ang (Pinoy Heritage), plus newcomers to the pastry scene ‘Sweet Cheese Us’ and ‘Sweet Condesa’.
The parol lantern is the quintessential Filipino symbol of hope, blessings, luck, and peace, during the holiday season, and can be found lighting up windows in Filipino homes throughout the world.
This year’s theme will honor the resilience of leaders, artists, youth, student groups, and especially families who have faced political and economic challenges for decades in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
The Parol Festival is not just a celebration, but also a reflection of history in the area which has long been a site of resistance against community displacement. It is a reminder of the community’s strength and the ways it has continued to rise up.
