Event Details

San Mateo County politics are clean and tame today, but back when the County was first formed in 1856, things were dirty and wild. The San Mateo County Historical Association will present its President, Mitch Postel, who will tell about ballot box stuffing, voter intimidation and other corrupt tricks perpetrated 165 years ago in his webinar entitled “The Legacy of Corruption.”
This program will take place on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 3 p.m. Exactly 165 years before, polls were open, and the County’s first election was taking place. A group of wily San Francisco politicians, in league with criminal gangs, were attempting to take over the new County before it could be organized in an orderly fashion.
The presentation is part of the Historical Association’s “Courthouse Docket” lecture series sponsored by Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation. Registration required.
