“The Marriage of Figaro” Comic 18th Century Play in a Park | Berkeley

The Actors Ensemble presents free performances of “The Marriage of Figaro”, the revolutionary comedy play (not the opera) at the beautiful John Hinkel Park Amphitheatre in Berkeley.

The Marriage of Figaro is the 18th century comedy by Beaumarchais which foreshadowed the French Revolution. This classic of the theatre tells a surprisingly modern tale of the battle of the sexes and the victory of the 99%. No one will be quite what she seems in this wild frolic in the park, with music and dance (but not opera*) – for the whole family.

Enjoy performances on Saturdays and Sundays at John Hinkel Park Amphitheatre, July 2nd – July 17th at 4 pm. There will be a special performance on Monday, July 4th at 4 pm. Have a picnic and watch a classic comedy.

But what about Mozart? Beaumarchais wrote the play first, in French. It was some time before it finally made it past the the censors, but eventually it became the most successful stage play to be produced in France in the 18th century. This production is based on the original stage play, still funny and relevant all these many years later. Adapted by Second City founder Bernard Sahlins and directed by Susannah Wood. The Actors Ensemble of Berkeley has been producing high-quality theatre with a community flavor since 1957.

The amphitheater consists of wide stone steps – blankets and/or low lawn chairs are recommended. Wheelchair accessible – reservations especially for those with limited mobility – call 510-649-5999.
