Join Remakes Bay Area Hub on April 24th at 6:30 pm PT for a conversation around Remembering Rana Plaza. Led by Ayesha Barenblat and Lynda Grose.

We will discuss the history of Rana Plaza, the strides that have been made in the last 10 years since the factory collapse, and how to protect progress by signing The International Accord.

About Rana Plaza

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, the deadliest industrial disaster in manufacturing history. 1,138 garment workers lost their lives, and over 2,500 more were injured as they made clothes for some of the world’s biggest fashion brands.

About the Accord

After the horrific tragedy, dozens of brands came to the table to sign the Accord, a binding agreement to implement a transformative safety program that has stopped disasters like Rana Plaza from happening again, making workplaces safer for 2.5 million workers through factory renovations and worker education programs.

While much progress on safety has been made in Bangladesh, it isn’t the only country where garment workers sew in dangerous conditions. Last year, the Accord was expanded to protect millions of textile and garment workers in Pakistan. Protest this progress by #SigningtheAccord

About the Speakers

Ayesha Barenblat is a social entrepreneur with a passion for building sustainable supply chains that respect people and our planet. With over 15 years of leadership to promote social justice and sustainability within the fashion industry, she founded Remake to mobilize citizens to demand a more just, transparent, and accountable fashion industry. Remake’s free educational resources, advocacy campaigns, and sustainable brands directory are focused on making fashion a force for good.

Lynda Grose co-founded ESPRIT’s ecollection line, launched in 1992 which was the first ecologically responsible clothing line marketed internationally by a major corporation. As a practicing designer, consultant, and educator, Grose has worked across sectors of the economy from farmers and artisans to private companies and NGOs to popularize and advance sustainability in the fashion sector. Grose is currently a professor in fashion design at California College of the Arts (CCA), where she developed landmark sustainable fashion curricula and helped establish CCA’s minor in ecological practice.
