Rock + Soul Rarities on Film | Mission

These guys dig up rare or forgotten movies, often shorts and share them with audiences in their cozy screening room.

This time, Oddball Films present: “Rock +Soul Rarities on Film,” an evening of rare Rock and Soul featuring 1960s and 1970s rock, psych, soul and jazz performance on film. The event is a benefit for Save KUSF.

NOW SHOWING:

• Two episodes of John Byner’s wild, anarchic, 1970 “Something Else” TV program (featuring full performances by rock legends Credence Clearwater Revival, 3 Dog Night, Frijid Pink, Roberta Flack and more),
• James Brown: The Man” a 1967 film featuring the great soul singer
• Black Music in America: From Then Till Now (1971) includes priceless performances of Louis Armstrong, Bessie, Bandleader Count Basie, “Lady Day” Billie Holiday, BB King, Nina Simone, jazz legend Coleman Hawkins, American music genius Duke Ellington, horn legend Cannonball Adderly and group and a soul rocking psychedelic Sly and the Family Stone performance.
• The Darktown Strutters trailer: a absolutely over-the-top trailer for the wackiest blaxploitation chick flick ever.
• New York City, a campy travel promo film featuring garage rockers The Churls
• Black Sabbath Parade, SF throws a tranny parade for Ozzy and the boys
• Condensed Cream of Beatl*s, a wild, high speed montage of the Fab’s career
• Plus Elvin Jones and The James Gang from the 1971 psychedelic western “Zachariah”
• Amateur footage of The Jefferson Airplane.

JUST SO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS: Most of these films are quite scarce, despite scads of accolades and international awards.
