San Francisco Announces Plan to Reopen City Hall to Public

Starting June 7, City Hall will be open for in-person services and general public access

Today, Mayor London N. Breed and City Administrator Carmen Chu announced the schedule for reopening City Hall to the public. City Hall was shut down in March 2020, along with the rest of the City, and has not been open for the general public for almost 15 months.

The San Francisco Office of the County Clerk is delighted to welcome you back into City Hall and to our offices.

Beginning June 7, 2021, our office hours will be as follows:

Monday through Friday
8:00 am to 1:00 pm for appointments and walk-in services

City ID appointments start on June 1, 2021
Marriage License appointments start on June 7, 2021
Civil Marriage Ceremonies start on June 9, 2021

Due to our initial limited staff for counter service, we encourage professional services to continue to reach us by mail and online whenever possible.

Starting Monday, June 7, City Hall will reopen for in-person services and general public access. This includes in-person services like applying for marriage licenses, obtaining birth and death certificates, recording documents, and registering businesses as well as payment of property and business taxes and fees. Counter services will be open for the Treasurer and Tax Collector’s Office, the Assessor’s Office, County Clerk, Office of Small Business, and other agencies.

You Can Finally Book a Wedding Again at SF’s City Hall

How to book an in-person marriage ceremony: The County Clerk will begin to accept online appointments for in-person marriage ceremonies today (May 12) and marriage ceremonies (no more than six guests) will resume after City Hall reopens with the first in-person weddings resuming on June 8th (though on the online calendar we only see weddings available starting June 9)

Book your wedding appointment

In the week prior, starting June 1, some City Hall services will be open for very limited in-person services by appointment only and not open to the general public. For more details on the reopening schedules and plans for each Department, visit sf.gov/location/city-hall.

Visitors to City Hall are required to wear facial coverings and maintain 6 feet of distance from members of other households. There may also be additional instructions regarding maximum occupancy when receiving services at individual offices. Regular security screenings will take place upon entry at the Goodlett/Polk Street Steps and the Grove Street entrances. The Van Ness steps and McAllister Street entrances will remain closed.

San Francisco City Hall Reopens to the public on June 7, 2021.
Not all entrances are open yet.

When you get to City Hall you will need to:

  • Enter through Goodlett or Grove Street entrances
  • Wear a mask or face coverings at all times
  • Maintain 6 feet of distance with members of other households

To enter City Hall, you will need to go through security screening, including metal detector and bag screening.
