Notable authors, artists, and conversation starters explore themes from ancient history to current events through interactive dialogues, stimulating talks, panels, and films.
Alcatraz Island has a fascinating and varied history. “The Rock” was an American military site, an infamous federal prison, and the site of a 19-month Indian occupation in the early 1970s. Join John Cantwell, National Park Service (NPS) Interpretive Ranger, for an insightful discussion of the island’s history. Cantwell will also discuss what the NPS has in store for Alcatraz, while sharing his own experiences of the 24 years he has spent as a ranger on the island.
John Cantwell began volunteering for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at age 14, one year after the park was created. Soon after beginning his professional career at Fort Point, Cantwell fulfilled his childhood dream and moved to Alcatraz. He has won numerous awards, including an Emmy for his work interpreting history for TV shows, movies, and special events.
