SF History Night | Pacific Heights
The San Francisco History Association hosts monthly talks which explore our city’s enchanting history in depth.
Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.
In addition to being our meeting location, Congregation Sherith Israel is one of San Francisco’s original Jewish synagogues. With roots going back to Yom Kippur 1849, the congregation grew to become one of the City’s prominent Jewish institutions. Its current location, constructed in 1904, served as a courthouse after the 1906 earthquake and fire, as well as hosting a meeting for the founding of the United Nations. Prepare for an evening of Jewish San Franciscan history and some great stories and photos from Sherith Israel’s considerable past.
San Francisco historians Judi Leff and Joseph Amster, who are both members of Sherith Israel, will give a presentation on the synagogue’s considerable history. The evening will also include a special tour of the building’s stunning sanctuary, with its magnificent dome, stained-glass windows, and pipe organ. Judi is a former SFHA board member. She has served on the staff of Temple Emmanu-El and currently works for the Institute on Aging; Joseph is a current member of the SFHA board and is better known as Emperor Norton.
Following the presentation, join Joseph and Judi for an exclusive tour of the sanctuary!
Doors open at 7 p.m. with refreshments and a historical book sale; presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp. There is a $10 admission for nonmembers. Paid parking at CPMC on Webster, one block away, plus a limited amount of street parking. Muni: 1, 2, 3, 10, 22, 24.
