Local Eco-Conscious Designer Punk Majesty Will Showcase at Haight Street Art Center’s “We Are the One” Punk Photography Exhibit, July 25 – September 22
Join the Opening Celebration on August 2!
San Francisco, CA – The Haight Street Art Center is thrilled to announce the inclusion of Punk Majesty, the eco-conscious DIY punk brand by local artist and designer Alisha Amnesia, alongside its upcoming exhibit “We Are the One: San Francisco Punk, 1970s – 1980s.” This exhibit will run from July 25 through September 22, with an opening celebration on the evening of August 2. Punk Majesty’s unique, hand-painted and embellished upcycled clothing pieces will be displayed alongside iconic punk photography and memorabilia, celebrating the brand’s inspired roots in punk culture, with a capsule collection for sale during the exhibit.
Alisha Amnesia’s Punk Majesty is known in music and art communities for its authentic DIY origins, inspired by 70s and 80s punk fashions and street art. The brand’s one-of-a-kind designs have been worn by legendary musicians, including members of The Go Go’s, Blondie, The Damned, The Dead Boys, Crime, and Sigue Sigue Sputnik, as well as its fan base from the current music and art scenes.
Exhibition Highlights
“We Are the One: San Francisco Punk, 1970s – 1980s” is a comprehensive showcase of S.F. punk club posters and flyers, punk films, local punk music, and 150 striking photographs of iconic bands and musicians. Curated by S.F. punk expert Michael Goldberg, former Rolling Stone West Coast music editor, the exhibition features photos of Crime, the Avengers, the Ramones, Devo, Mutants, Blondie, the Nuns, John Cale, Lou Reed, Nico, the Dead Kennedys, Sleepers, Flipper, and more.
Among the exhibition’s highlights are 22 of artist Bruce Conner’s photographs taken at the famed Mabuhay Gardens, where the S.F. punk scene began in late 1976. These stunning black-and-white photographs, along with eight rarely-seen color photos, capture the raw energy and spirit of the era. The exhibit will also include rare punk club flyers and posters from Kareem Kaddah’s extensive collection.
Special Events
The Haight Street Art Center will host a punk film night and panel on Friday, September 6. The event will feature screenings of “San Francisco’s First and Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Movie: Crime 1978,” directed by Jon Bastian, and the unfinished documentary “In the Red,” shot in 1977 and 1978 by Liz Klein and Karen Merchant. Live performance clips shot by Target Video’s Joe Rees will also be shown. Following the screenings, a panel discussion will include V. Vale, Henry Rosenthal, Jon Bastian, Liz Klein, Karen Merchant, Michael Goldberg, and Penelope Houston.
Meet the Designer
In addition to the exhibition, Alisha Amnesia will be available for one-on-one appointments during the duration of the exhibition from July 25- Sept. 22. Customers can meet the designer, explore her collection, and place custom orders for unique custom pieces.
