Event Details

Exploding rent and housing prices are making San Francisco an increasingly unaffordable place in which to rent or buy. Why is this happening and what can be done? In this moderated discussion, two housing experts will speak, ask each other questions, and answer questions from the audience.

Both are leading advocates and frequent opponents in the San Francisco housing wars, but they respect each other and see the value in finding common ground.

Squaring off will be:

  • Tim Colen, Executive Director of the SF Housing Action Coalition
  • Peter Cohen, co-director of the Council of Community Housing Organizations

– Is rent control part of the solution or part of the problem?
– Should “black market” in-law units be legalized and/or new in-law units authorized?
– Are prefabricated and/or “micro” units a good idea?
– Should the city permit higher density housing in certain areas?
– Mayor Lee wants to add 30,000 “affordable” units in the next six years. Will he succeed?

Post-discussion, there will be a one-question poll: are you significantly better informed now than you were at the start of the evening?
