Event Details

SF’s iconic Castro Theatre is officially reopening after a 4-year, $41 million restoration

After being dark for years, one of San Francisco’s most beloved landmarks is finally back. This Friday, the fully restored Castro Theatre will celebrate its grand reopening with a short official ribbon cutting, marking the start of a new era for the historic venue.

Led by Another Planet Entertainment, the massive rehabilitation preserves the theater’s legendary beauty while upgrading it for modern performances – including standing-room concerts for the first time ever.

The Castro Grand Reopening Ribbon Cutting

When: Friday, February 6, 2026 at 5:45 pm
Where: Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St., SF
Who: SF Mayor Daniel Lurie, SF Board President Rafael Mandelman, State Senator Scott Wiener, APE CEO Gregg Perloff, community leaders & more

The ribbon cutting will take place just before the Castro’s first public event: a benefit screening of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, supporting the Castro Benefit District.

What’s New Inside (and Out)

The reopening showcases stunning restorations and major upgrades, including:

  • Restored original ceiling artwork, sgraffito murals & a long-hidden historic proscenium

  • Revived neon blade sign, marquee & modernized iconic chandelier

  • The world’s largest and most versatile digital organ

  • New HVAC system, more restrooms & full ADA accessibility throughout

  • Flexible setup for films, comedy, live music & standing-room shows

Built in 1922 and designed by famed architect Timothy Pfleuger, the Castro Theatre has long been the cultural heart of SF’s LGBTQ+ community. Thanks to this once-in-a-generation restoration, it’s ready to shine again — louder, brighter, and more inclusive than ever.
