Join the Exploratorium, the San Francisco Rec and Parks Department, and Urban Alchemy in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the opening of eight new experiences at Alvord Lake—these installations have been designed and built by the Exploratorium to reveal, enhance, and celebrate the ever-changing natural and social landscapes of the park.

Once an expanse of sand dunes, Alvord Lake is now an almost entirely constructed landscape meant for exploration. Greet others along the High-Five Highway, investigate how wind shapes the shifting sands of Hidden Dunes, experiment with the magnetic Black Sand found at Ocean Beach, explore the algae that thrive in the lake, and more—and at this grand opening, learn about how the installation came to be and its role in the life of Golden Gate Park with San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston, Exploratorium Managing Director Phoebe White, senior artist Shawn Lani, and San Francisco Rec and Parks General Manager Phil Ginsburg.
