SF’s Muni Heritage Weekend 2026: Ride Rare Historic Vehicles (Sept. 19-20)

SF’s Muni Heritage Weekend 2026: Ride Rare Historic Vehicles (Sept. 19-20)

Step aboard San Francisco’s transit history at Muni Heritage Weekend, a two-day celebration featuring rare vintage streetcars, buses and cable cars, free rides, interactive exhibits, family activities and more at the San Francisco Railway Museum and Don Chee Way Plaza.

San Francisco’s iconic transit system gets a history lesson and you get to ride it. Muni Heritage Weekend returns Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with historic vehicles taking over the area around the San Francisco Railway Museum at 77 Steuart Street, just steps from the Ferry Building.

The 2026 lineup is expected to include two Blackpool “Boat Trams,” Muni’s historic Car 1 from 1912, the charming single-truck “Dinky” streetcar from 1896, international trams and more. Car 1 is particularly significant: it was America’s first publicly owned streetcar. There will also be an array of Muni’s vintage buses, ranging from vehicles 35 to 87 years old, along with additional historic vehicles displayed around the outdoor plaza and along the Embarcadero.

And these aren’t just museum pieces. Free rides on vintage streetcars, trolley coaches and motor coaches will depart from Don Chee Way Plaza throughout the weekend. The famous Blackpool Boat Tram will cruise the Embarcadero on a loop up to Pier 39, while historic cable cars from discontinued lines will be available to ride nearby on California Street.

Beyond the vehicles, the weekend will feature interactive exhibits, transit artifacts, family-friendly activities and informational booths. Stop into the San Francisco Railway Museum for free admission, check out the Muni Store pop-up for official transit merch, or sign up in advance for a guided cable car walking tour with SF City Guides.

The event is centered at Don Chee Way Plaza and the San Francisco Railway Museum (77 Steuart Street), making it an easy walk from the Ferry Building, Embarcadero Plaza and nearby transit. And, yes, the whole thing is free including the vintage vehicle rides.
