Kick off Pride Month in the Presidio! Enjoy a day outdoors with queer history hikes, book giveaways with San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) Hormel LGBTQIA Center, storytelling at Drag Story Hour, a Tea Dance Celebration with the Music Connects Foundation, and so much more!
The activities for the day are all drop-in and will take place at the park’s newest destination, Presidio Tunnel Tops. Whether you’re reading and learning around the Campfire Circle or you’re taking in beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge on a hike, celebrate Pride your way. See agenda below for more details. Note: some activities may be limited to capacity.
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Roving Ranger Mobile Park Truck @ Western Lawn.
Meet the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy’s Roving Ranger, a popular community engagement vehicle that connects people to parks and parks to people! Think a “Nature Pop-Up” on wheels that has a wide variety of interactive activities that inspire awe, wonder, and curiosity about local nature!
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.: SFPL Hormel LGBTQIA Center Tabling and reading nooks @ Western Lawn.
Read and learn with the Hormel Center as you explore Queer books for all ages along with library giveaways and more!
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Presidio Community YMCA Tabling and Bike Smoothie Machine @ Western Meadow.
Get-to-know the Presidio YMCA, dive into Queer ecology, and get a free pass to the Y.
11 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Drag Story Hour @ Campfire Circle.
Drag Story Hour celebrates reading through the glamorous art of drag. San Francisco’s chapter network creates diverse, accessible, and culturally inclusive family programming where kids can express their authentic selves and become bright lights of change in their communities. Drag Story Hour envisions a world where kids can learn from LGBTQ+ stories and experiences to love themselves, celebrate the fabulous diversity in their communities, and stand up for what they believe in, and each other.
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Queer BIPOC History Hike @ Western Lawn.
Connect with other black, indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) folks as we walk along trails and enjoy the beautiful views our parks have to offer. Let’s learn about local plants, connect on our shared Queer ancestors, and come together in community together. (Low/medium difficulty. About two miles long. Dogs on leash welcome!)
1 – 4 p.m.: Music Connects Foundation’s Tea Dance Celebration @ East Meadow.
Bathe in the sun and enjoy beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge while dancing to soulful House music in celebration of our amazing BIPOC LGBTQIA+ community. Our musical journey will be curated by DJs Brown Amy and Jason Godfrey with a live performance by Tobirus Mozelle.
“Tea dances” (or T-dances) are historical gathering spaces for the queer community, started in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. These dances served a crucial role in LGBTQ+ history, providing a space for connection, self-expression, and community during a repressive time. In 1979, The EndUp began “Church”, a gathering that became the LGBTQ+ community’s tea dance on Sundays in San Francisco.
Pride in the Presidio is an intentionally Queer event. That means this event provides a space of belonging, kindness, empathy, patience, exploration, celebration, and joy. All are welcome here, and the LGBTQ+ community is centered. RSVPs are not required for this event, but they’re appreciated as they help us prepare.
The Pride in the Presidio event is organized by the Music Connects Foundation, San Francisco Public Library Hormel Center, Presidio YMCA and Drag Story Hour in collaboration with the Partnership for the Presidio.
