January 22, 2023 marks the first day of the Year of the Rabbit. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco is proud to bring back the public art project, Rabbit on Parade, to its list of festivities this Lunar New Year.
Our very own Union Square Plaza is the home of the Peace to Home Rabbit sponsored by @alaskaair. Blue clouds and cherry blossoms represent good luck and safe travels in the year of the Water Rabbit. Plum blossoms along the back of the sculpture represent loyalty, strength, and success. The Chinese knot with the upside down “fu” symbolizes unity, family gathering, peace and love. Chinese coins throughout the body ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, health, and peace. Chinese-style clouds representing good luck and good fortune. Clouds are also an omen of peace.
Additional Rabbit statues are publicly displayed around San Francisco now through Sunday, February 5, to help ring in the new year —and if you snap a selfie with them, you might win a prize.
The Rabbit statues spotlight local artists as well as reflect upon the culture, people, and traditions surrounding Chinese New Year.
The Chinese New Year Parade will be on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 5:15 PM, stepping off at Second and Market Streets. It is a free event for all to attend but tickets must be purchased to sit in the bleacher sections.
