Sunday, February 4th Proclaimed as “Willie Mays Day” in
San Francisco in Honor of Baseball Great

24 Restaurants Citywide Offer Unique “Say Hey” Specials
Honoring #24 on the San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (February 1, 2024) – This Sunday, February 4th (2/4/24), marks a special occasion in San Francisco, as 24 restaurants citywide will offer a unique “Say Hey” special, in honor of the legendary baseball great Willie Mays (#24 on the San Francisco Giants).

Sunday has been officially proclaimed by San Francisco Mayor London Breed as “Willie Mays Day,” in honor of baseball legend, #24 Willie Mays. 2.4.24 is a once-in-a-century event, happening for the first time in Willie’s lifetime.

Citywide Celebrations
In celebration, iconic San Francisco landmarks will be decorated to honor the “Say Hey Kid,” an American hero who impacted many generations of people both on and off the field. City Hall will illuminate in orange and black lights, and Willie Mays Plaza – featuring the Willie Mays statue – and Oracle Park will also be lit up to celebrate Willie. A special banner will hang from the 24 palm trees outside Oracle Park and the scoreboard will commemorate 2.4.24 throughout the day. The Thrive City Plaza video board at Chase Center will also pay tribute.

Cable Car #24 will ride down the iconic San Francisco hills, and SFMTA will ring the bell 24 times at the Hyde Street Stop at 2:24 pm. Fans are encouraged to attend dressed in Giants gear.

24 businesses throughout San Francisco will honor the American icon with Say Hey Specials throughout the day.

Restaurant Activations
• For world-renowned pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani, Willie Mays has been an inspiration since 1961, when Tony bought his very first baseball card of the iconic player, one that he has cherished ever since. On 2/4/24, also known as Willie Mays Day, Slice House by Tony Gemignani will offer an extra special slice that pays homage to the beloved San Francisco Giants and Willie Mays iconic jersey number. Inspired by Willie’s love of southern comfort food, the “Say Hey Sicilian” is a premium slice with fried chicken cutlets, house made spicy link sausage, fresh mozzarella, vodka sauce, and topped with oregano, pecorino, garlic oil, parsley, and mashed sweet potato – which is orange, paying an homage to the San Francisco Giants. The effort to unite the restaurant and bar community to honor Mays in San Francisco was created and executed by Adam Swig, founder and executive director of the California nonprofit Value Culture. Swig came up with the idea for Willie Mays Day. “When I saw 2.4.24 on the calendar, I said that’s Willie’s Day, he is the iconic #24, the original. He made it cool, this is his day,” said Swig. “Willie is the greatest baseball player of all time, an American icon, a living legend, a great human being and friend. He’s also a big foodie and it’s awesome that the community has come together to celebrate our San Francisco G.O.A.T. San Francisco loves Willie Mays!”

All are invited to participate in the day sharing photos and experiences using the #WillieMaysDay and #SayHey24 and wearing Giants and Willie Mays gear. All San Francisco and businesses in the area are encouraged to join the celebration and offer Say Hey Specials throughout the day.

On Willie Mays Day, we celebrate the grace, the dignity and, most of all, the joy that Willie exudes wherever he goes. On top of the Say Hey Specials, many of the businesses are offering partial proceeds of the specials sales to the Willie Mays Scholars program launched back in 2021 by the Giants Community Fund launched in honor of Willie’s love for kids, a needs-based scholarship available to Black 9th and 11th graders living in San Francisco. Applications for the 2024 Willie Mays Scholars are now open.
