Shoeshine Stand | Market & Sutter St, San Francisco, Ca

On Wednesday, March 8th at noon, a brand new shoeshine stand will open its dark blue panels to its very first customers. The shoeshine stand replaces one destroyed in the same spot on Market Street, by an out-of-control taxi late last year. It is the collaboration of operators Susan Giammona and Saleem Bey, and architecture firm Thing One.

Following the tragic accident, Justin Beadle, Principal at Thing One, offered Susan and Saleem pro-bono design and budgeting services to assist in rebuilding the stand. (The crash happened across the street from his office.) After the design phase, Thing One marshaled a group of ten local volunteers and built the stand over the course of two weekends.

Susan will be offering a $5 shoeshine special to all who attend the grand reopening at Market and Sutter. Saleem, whom Susan saw “flying over the shoeshine stand” when the accident happened, has been in an ongoing process of recovery. Those involved in the rebuilding are excited that he plans to attend the opening.

Editor’s note: We couldn’t find the event on Facebook, but the promoter submitted the event for March 8, 2017.
