Douglas Andelin is a native northern Californian. After a BA in Graphic design from SJSU, Andelin received a full scholarship in Illustration from Art Center College of Design. He headed to New York City to begin a 13 year freelance career. Living in the heart of Manhattan, close to all the city’s great museums, helped to shape the young artist’s artistic philosophy and ever growing experimentation. He has illustrated books, magazines, advertising, posters, annual reports and maps. Andelin has won numerous awards as both an illustrator and artist.
In 1999, Andelin slowed his commercial work in order to focus more clearly on his personal work as a father, sculptor, painter and philanthropist.
For Andelin, painting is a place where he goes to feel small. He knows that nature is his greatest teacher. He asks questions about perception, time, space and himself as an artist. In nature, he strives to look outside his own answers and listen. Andelin yearns to shed what he knows and reach into the paint and grasp a new honesty. He is in a constant balancing act between searching and forgetting, asking and listening, consciousness and unconsciousness.
Painting has a long history within his family, and Andelin deeply roots his practice in the history of painting. He looks to Turner, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Monet, and Wyeth. He paints outside, directly from life. Andelin draws his inspiration from the changing forces of nature – fog, water, movement, and weather. His paintings carry this vitality as he is consumed by the changing light and the tumultuous relationship between man and nature. He wishes to inspire the viewer to consider our actions on the earth and to value our role of stewardship.
Andelin’s work is in permanent collections internationally.
