Illuminate Launches a Second Season of Sounds of the Street

Live Music @ India Basin Shoreline Park September – November 2024

A second season of ‘Sounds of the Street’ – a series of free live music concerts at India Basin Waterfront Park will delight those seeking live music offerings on Saturdays and Sundays starting September 14 through mid-November,  IIlluminate and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced today.,

The concert series will feature diverse musicians and artists representing a variety of genres.

All shows are from 1 to 4 p.m. at India Basin Shoreline Park (Hunters Point Boulevard and Hawes Street). As always, Illuminate events are free to the public and all are welcome.

This series is an initiative of the India Basin Waterfront Park’s Equitable Development Plan, a landmark blueprint ensuring the future park will benefit current Bayview-Hunters Point residents while preserving the culture and identity of the historic neighborhood.

Concerts and other activities, including some workshops, will take place in “The Lab” a classroom/performance space located at the park.

Concert Dates include:

  • September 14: Soul, Funk and R&B with Martin Luther and Friends plus special opening act Veotis
  • September 15: Big Band, Swing and Jazz with Dr. David Hardiman’s All-Star Big Band with Special Guest Vocalists David Anthony Hardiman and Nina Causey
  • October 5: Bay Area Hip Hop featuring Afterthought, Ash, and Sunday with Top Chefs and Special Guests
  • October 6: Special Final Concert and workshop with the Curtis Family C-Notes
  • Additional concert/event dates in late October and November will be released in a few weeks.

The concert series’ producing partners include  India Basin Waterfront Park project partners, Illuminate the Arts, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

The Equitable Development Plan’s partners include the SF Parks Alliance, A. Philip Randolph Institute, Trust for Public Land, Ruth Williams Opera House, and San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

About the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department currently manages more than 230 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces throughout San Francisco, including two outside city limits—Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras. The system includes full-complex recreation centers, swimming pools, golf courses, sports fields, and numerous small-to-medium-sized clubhouses that offer a variety of sports- and arts-related recreation programs for people of all ages. Included in the Department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo, and Lake Merced. In 2017, San Francisco became the first city in the nation where all residents have access to a park within a 10-minute walk, a direct result of the Department’s commitment to increasing and improving parkland in the city.

Illuminate’s mission is to rally large groups of people together to create impossible works of public art that, through awe, free humanity’s better nature. The San Francisco-based nonprofit’s large-scale and radically accessible installations are experienced by more than 20 million people annually.
