Event Details

In the 1970s, residents of North Beach developed plans to transform Columbus Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard. The plans died on the vine.

40 years later, their vision will be resurrected and celebrated at StreetUtopia: Goodbye, Columbus from noon to 5 pm on Sunday, September 15, 2013.

Participants will create their own Utopian vision of Columbus Avenue using an array of found objects to be freely manipulated on a topographic model. The 100 ft model will occupy Jack Kerouac Alley from end to end.

In addition, artist and city planner James Rojas will lead a “Place It” interactive workshop to invoke emotional response to place. Rojas has developed a process that improves community participation through critical engagement and creative thinking. Bubble Real Estate will be present as a sponsor.
