SF’s Yerba Buena Gardens Festival 2025
The 2025 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival hosts a full lineup of free outdoor music, theater, circus, dance, poetry, and children’s programs. The Festival opens on Saturday, May 10, 2025 with La Santa Cecilia to kick off its 25th Anniversary Season.
Little known in the West and rarely heard in the Bay Area since the passing of legendary oud master and composer Hamza El Din in 2006, Sudanese music is an exquisitely expressive and deeply subtle tradition ripe for rediscovery. The Sudan Music Ensemble brings together some of the finest musicians from the vast and troubled North African nation, showcasing the ancient land’s various regions and ethnic groups through music, dance and spoken word.
Featured performers include oud expert and vocalist Khalid el Mahi, percussionist Hafiz Abdullah, multi-instrumentalist Mazin Jamal (aka Tarawa), and the great vocalist Salma Al Assal. The Sudan Music Ensemble Youth, an organization devoted to passing on Sudanese culture to children growing up in the diaspora, opens the concert with traditional dances.
