San Francisco — Where every street and everyone has an angle

In crime fiction, fog is often employed to conceal motives, identities, or the occasional body. In real life, it’s less selective. For this edition of 2nd Saturdays at Bazaar Cafe presents songs that operate under similar conditions — limited visibility, unreliable signals, and a general reluctance to explain themselves. What’s left unsaid may be intentional. Or it may simply be obscured.

Oceanography is the solo project of Oakland, California-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Kelly. He brings a unique pop sensibility to bittersweet songs of heartbreak, loss, and longing, recalling at times The War on Drugs, My Morning Jacket, and Damien Jurado. His literary eye for detail and deceptively powerful voice create moments of catharsis and beauty amid the bleak and mundane.

Jared Karol has been part of many Bay Area musical scenes over the last 25 years—a singer songwriter in SF in the early 2000s, leader of an Americana trio in the East Bay in 2010s, and a current member of reggae band Paper Kayak based out of Martinez. Whether fingerstyle ragtime blues, bluegrass flatpicking, or subtle skanking, Jared knows how to lay down infectious grooves behind thought provoking stories of San Francisco, relationships, politics, and more.

Hosted by E.G. Phillips, who has the patient stillness of someone used to working in low visibility
