Event Details

Due to rain in this weekend’s forecast, this event will now take place in Chase Center’s West Lobby.

Join us in Thrive City for our annual Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, February 1st! Enjoy an afternoon full of vibrant live entertainment, featuring Queen Iminah & the AAFE Kids Dance Company and our Spoken Word Poetry Slam! Don’t miss out on our arts & craft station, free culinary delights from Black-owned businesses, and an inspiring talk by our guest speaker Otis R. Taylor on race and equity. RSVP while supplies last.

Our big headliner this year is Bay Area indie artis August Lee Stevens! This performance will showcase August’s own sense of radical Black Joy as she performs original music from her upcoming projects. Her dynamic sound merges the lyrical rawness and simplicity of folk songs with the lush melodies and vocals of neo-soul. Her debut EP “Better Places” came out in March 2024 to critical acclaim. Other recent highlights include performing at TEDx, supporting current Tiny Desk winner Philharmonik, sitting in with Brian Jackson, Martin Luther McCoy and an allstar band in a tribute to Gil Scott Heron at SFJAZZ, and performing as part of the emerging artists supergroup Oakland Rising at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. She is also a recipient of the Local Sirens Residency with Women’s Audio Mission.

Eventbrite registration is highly recommended and will receive priority access to the event. If the event is sold out, limited walkup registrations may be available on a first-come, first-served basis day of the event.
