Event Details

The common thread throughout El Rey is music. We see that the need to write and listen to songs that contain socio-political content seems to be stronger in less developed countries. Perfection in musical production is not paramount here, the key is expression of true emotion. The documentary aims to highlight musicians’ quests for their roots in an ever increasingly globalized world. This quest for orientation and self-expression unites us all and frontiers disappear.

In the film the local musicians, that were encountered throughout the year-long journey, are featured; with the focus being on their message. Even though at times these messages can be solemnly honest, it is with humor and a sense of fun that most of the characters live their lives, and interact with Adi and Stefan.

Instead of just traveling through each place, we are immersed in the local flavor and musical culture, a modern and fresh perspective of a road trip.

Documentary, Austria / Mexico Director: Stefan Lechner
