Please join us on November 17, at the Marketplace, for the launch of “Tonarigumi,” the City of Alameda’s historic marker project celebrating our town’s hidden Japanese history.
“Tonarigumi” means “neighborhood” and the project will commemorate the thriving Japantown that sprouted up on our little stretch of Park street starting in 1912.
A plaque, “Traces of Alameda Japantown,” will be unveiled that day and is the first of four that will be installed in the area. These markers will surface the lost stories of our neighborhood while deepening the appreciation of our immigrant past and the diversity we celebrate today.
The event will also feature remarks from Japanese community members, City representatives, and TaikoPeace community dance.
We’re deeply honored to host this important marker of our past and hope you can join us for this celebration.
