Three of the top emerging talents in the world of classical music join to present an evening of music offering musical resolutions to the ominous turbulence of our time.
Saturday May 25th Trio Barclay performs Beethoven’s Trio in D Major Op. 70, “Ghost”, followed by Sheridan Seyfried’s Piano Trio (2021) at the intimate Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco.
Both works, in their own way, encompass the audience in a journey through gigantic moods, giving powerful voice to ominous fear, gripping tension, and wailing grief, only to surrender to joyful relief, exultation, and eventually serenity. If you thrill at the intense of range of human emotion, or crave resolution of the tensions in life now, both of these will more than gratify you for an evening’s journey. Strap yourself to the mast tightly.
Your crew for this night are three of the most lauded young classical musicians in the world:
Multi-award winning Steinway artist, pianist Sean Kennard has appeared in recital and as soloist with orchestras around the world, and his discography includes highly acclaimed solo and chamber music releases on Naxos, Delos, and Centaur. Sean Kennard is a star piano soloist with a remarkably flexible and collaborative approach as a chamber musician. Raised in Hawaii, Sean’s impressive list of musical accomplishments includes albums for the Centaur, Delos, and Naxos labels and a 2017 appointment to Stetson University, where he is chair of the piano division in the School of Music, and the artistic director of the Great Pianists at Stetson recital series and the Stetson Piano Scholars festival.
Described as a “strong, luminous pianist” by The Washington Post, Sean’s playing is also characterized by great delicacy, as displayed in his recording of the highly intricate and charming sonatas of Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. Sean brings to Trio Barclay a commitment to musical integrity and an easy-going demeanor that belies the seriousness of his approach.
Violinist Dennis Kim has spent more than a decade leading orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia. He was first appointed concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony at the age of 22. He then served as the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, before going on to lead the Seoul Philharmonic and the Tampere Philharmonic in Finland. Most recently, he was concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic in New York, where he has annually been a featured soloist, and is currently concertmaster of the Pacific Symphony. Coached by Isaac Stern, Felix Galimir, and Claude Frank, Dennis has since gone on to collaborate with such artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Jaime Laredo, and members of the Guarneri and Tokyo String Quartets. As guest concertmaster, Mr. Kim has performed on four continents, leading the BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, and others.
During his tenure as concertmaster with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Tampere Philharmonic, he was featured annually as a soloist. Over the last few seasons, he was a guest soloist with the Lebanon Philharmonic and the Orchestra NOW, with repertoire ranging from Mozart and Haydn to Glass and Penderecki.
Cellist Jonah Kim is an artist of great charisma and originality. His beauty of tone is immediately distinguishable by its signature sweetness. Kim invites the listener in with “the cosy warmth of a well-loved cashmere sweater,” (Gramophone) then “dives into the music with courage underpinned by formidable technical prowess, with which he achieves a dazzling performance.” (All About the Arts) Kim made his solo debut with Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Philadelphia Orchestra at 12 years of age, and has since captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Beyond the stage, his recent recording of the Kodaly Solo Sonata is being praised for “[capturing] the very elusiveness that gives the music its substance” (Gramophone) and “flawless delivery of its Herculean technical demands… the sense of exhilaration in this performance has us on the edge of our seats.” (The Strad). Named artistic director of Festival San Miguel de Allende in 2023, Kim is known for his unique programming, in which creativity and wide-ranging taste are guided by beauty.
Kim is also cellist of Trio Barclay, ensemble-in-residence at The Barclay Theater in Irvine, California; the group commission and premiere a new work for every concert they perform on their home stage. The Trio also tours worldwide.
The intimate venue is a National Historic Landmark known for its unique Arts & Crafts design, hidden garden, and connection to the flowering of the arts in early San Francisco. The SF Swedenborgian Church was built in 1895.
