In this lecture we will explore how the physical concepts of reflection, refraction, and interference of light interact with the microscopic structure of materials to produce phenomena like rainbows and mineral opalescence, and how biology has employed these techniques to create some of the most colorful animals on the planet. This lecture will be replete with live simulations of wave optics, as well as hands on microscopy of minerals and insects — come, learn, enjoy.
