“Urban Jazz Dance Company” Final Performances (May 15-17)
836M is proud to present the culminating performances of its artists-in-residence, Urban Jazz Dance Company (UJDC), under the direction of Antoine Hunter Purple Fire Crow. Since 2007, UJDC has garnered acclaim for its groundbreaking artistry and unwavering advocacy in expanding visibility and opportunities for Deaf and disabled artists.
Following a vibrant residency that included open rehearsals, community workshops, conversations, and visual art exhibitions, UJDC will present an evening-length multimedia performance at 836M from May 15–17. These performances will explore themes central to the company’s practice, including Deaf culture, language, identity, and collective expression.
Audiences will experience the powerful culmination of #DeafWoke Communication and Conversation through a dynamic fusion of movement, visuals, rhythm, and storytelling. The event will also feature work from resident visual artists Malik Seneferu and Cherie Espy, whose contributions have enriched the residency throughout.
Performances will include:
- Choreography by Antoine Hunter, featuring members of UJDC
- Live and visual art elements by Malik Seneferu & Cherie Espy
- Deaf theater performance by Fred Beam
