“Our baskets are living things. They start as tiny seeds and grow into something beautiful.” —Julia Parker
Join three speakers for an exploration of the life and work of basket maker Julia Parker, a Coast Miwok–Kashaya Pomo Native artist whose lifelong practice embodies the complex and evolving cultural traditions of basket making, and encompasses a deep understanding of the local landscape.
Led by Deborah Valoma, author of Scraping the Willow until it Sings: The Words and Work of Basket Maker Julia Parker, this discussion will consider the connections between aesthetics, cultural traditions, cultural translation, and ecological awareness. Parker’s captivating work allows us to reflect on the ways that traditional ecological knowledge might inform environmental literacy and stewardship.
