Event Details

Join us for an insightful conversation between L. Annette Binder and Sandell Morse, authors of The Vanishing Sky and The Spiral Shell as part of the San Mateo County Libraries literary series!

L. Annette Binder’s The Vanishing Sky is a World War II story through a German lens, telling of the irreparable damage of war on the home front, and one family’s participation–involuntary, unseen, or direct–in a dangerous regime. Drawing inspiration from her own father’s time in the Hitler Youth, Binder has crafted a spellbinding novel about the choices we make for country and for family.

In a narrative that unfolds and overlaps both past and present, Sandell Morse’s The Spiral Shell uncovers long-silenced stories of bravery and resistance among the civilians of a small town in France during WWII. In turn, Morse discovers not only the true stories of those who chose to fight against bigotry, oppression, and genocide, but an understanding of her own Jewish heritage and history denied her in childhood.
