Arsenal of Democracy: World War II and the Bay Area | Contemporary Historians at the Presidio | 2013

The communities that ring San Francisco Bay were irrevocably altered by WWII and still bear its visible marks in the remains of military bases and coastal defense fortifications, ships and shipbuilding facilities, worker housing and day-care facilities — some preserved in national parks.

Historian Stephen Haller explores the social, political, and military impact of World War II on the Bay Area. The war’s tangible legacy is revealed through a web-based tour of the National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary, which highlights 31 “heritage tourism” sites that reflect the Bay Area’s role as the “Arsenal of Democracy.”
