Event Details

It’s time for a Dance Break! On Wednesday, September 17, RAWdance activates San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Lane with an endorphin-filled community dance party, performances by some of the Bay’s most innovative contemporary dance-makers, and a much needed jolt of positivity. The four-hour lunchtime event promises action for both spectators and participants alike in a uniquely San Francisco setting.

Dance Break kicks off with joy-stirring, free performances by local dance powerhouses. Directed by drag artist Fuchsia, Una Productions blends contemporary dance and drag, bringing physically powerful dancing, unapologetically Queer imagery, and storytelling. Steeped in contemporary and club dance, with cinematic flair and a deep love of genre (especially b-horror and telenovelas), Karla Quintero conjures solo improvisations alongside a cast of her favorite imaginary partners. Under the direction of Chafin Seymour, seymour::dancecollective is a group of diverse movement artists whose performance boldly crosses aesthetic and cultural boundaries, and that draws a distinct sense of collaborative community derived from hip hop and DJ cultures. Creating an ensemble work as well as producing, RAWdance evokes a vividly kaleidoscopic and buoyant world that rides the line between glee and mania, precision and abandon.

Following the approximately 50-minute performance will be a family-friendly DJ’ed dance party led by LA FEMME PAPI, the DJ known for the beats behind the celebrated drag cabaret Clutch the Pearls as well as queer nights and events throughout San Francisco and Oakland. Their sets will transform the floor into a space for celebration. At 2pm the cycle repeats, so there will be two opportunities throughout the afternoon to see the performance and join in the dance party action.

The one-day event is free and open to the public and will have ASL Interpretation. Limited seating will be provided. Yerba Buena Lane is an accessible public space and is close to public transportation and multiple garages.
