Gourmet Ghetto (North Berkeley) | Shattuck Avenue and Vine Street, Berkeley, CA

2013 Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival | BerkeleyThe sidewalks along North Shattuck Ave. in the Gourmet Ghetto in Berkeley are the target of artists young and old, professional and greenhorn during the 17th annual Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, June 1, 2013. (In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for June 8, 2013)

Anyone can make chalk art on the Gourmet Ghetto sidewalks along North Shattuck Avenue and Vine Street. With no fees to artists, areas of sidewalk will be assigned to participants to create their own fanciful chalk drawing. There’s even a car to draw on with chalk. Chalk will be available for purchase for $10. Musical entertainment includes Laura Weinbach of Foxtails Brigade, The John Brothers Piano Company, Berkeley High Jazz Bands, Sean Lee’s One-Man Band, and more. A special children’s area at 1673 Shattuck Avenue has pony rides, inflatable bounce houses, jugglers, face painters and many more surprises (expect small fees for these extras).

The festival is free, but to eat chocolate you’ll need to purchase a packet of tickets (20 for $20) at event booths located at 1451, 1495 or 1673 Shattuck Ave. A Chalk Art Contest for the best drawing will be judged after 4 pm. First prize is $250 cash and runners-up get a $25 gift certificate from Philz Coffee. 2013 Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival | Berkeley
