Celebrate the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez. This classic Lesbian novel, first published in 1991, starts in 1850s Louisiana and continues through 200 years of eternal life. An exploration of “blackness, radical ecology, redefiinitions of family, and the erotic potential of the vampire story,” according to its publisher City Lights Books. Prof. Ajuan Mance of Mills College joins Ms. Gomez in conversation on these topics and Jewelle’s new play “Leaving the Blues,” about Blues singer-songwriter Alberta Hunter, which opens March 3 at the New Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Ms. Gomez will read from both works. Prof. Mance will also read from her new book Before Harlem, a reconstruction of African American literature before the Harlem Renaissance. Free event, with refreshments and doorprizes at 7. A book signing follows.
