2014 San Francisco Women’s Short Film Festival | The New Parkway Theater

Women’s Film Institute presents the annual San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival (SFIWFF) showcasing the best short films directed by women to commemorate Women’s History Month.

This compelling lineup of short films is crafted by local San Francisco Bay Area female filmmakers who will be in attendance for Q&A.

2014 films include:

Methel Island (12 min, 2013, USA) dir. by Meg Smaker
A meditation on meth. There is an island on the delta 45 minutes east of San Francisco that is infested with Crystal Meth. In this documentary, they explore the island and its inhabitants’ relationship to the drug. Four characters will take you on the journey of an addict: from the first states, to the comedown and finally the long road to recovery.

The Fifth Stage of Labor (8 min, 2013, USA) dir. by Cynthia Lubow
When a single lesbian mom’s only son is about to leave for college, her heartbreak and struggle to let him go is complicated by his telling her he’s selling marijuana to ease her financial pressure. SF Bay Area Premiere.

Sex: M (23 min, 2013, USA) dir. by Kate Elston
When Lucas was a girl named Laura, he always wanted to be a boy. Now he’s becoming one. This candid documentary follows Lucas Waldron, a 21 year-old transitioning from female to male, as he negotiates what it means to be transgender after years of struggling to identify himself. Oakland Premiere.

Behind Shattered Glass (9 min, 2012, USA) dir. by Chandra Reyes
Behind Shattered Glass is a re-imagining of the classic Alice in Wonderland tale, focusing on a troubled young woman who turns to a dream world, full of quirky characters, to help her cope with the terrible reality of her recent breakup.

3020 Laguna St. In Exitum (9 min, 2013, USA) dir. by Ashley Rodholm and Joe Picard
Based on and shot in a site specific art installation, ’3020 Laguna St. In Exitum’ is a short experimental narrative that explores and documents art created within a condemned home. Oakland Premiere.

The Wait (8 min, 2011, USA) dir. Mary Guzmán
Unknown to each other, but in love with the same woman, Kimberly and Petra wait for help to arrive.

Kiss Her I’m Famous (5 min, 2014, USA) dir. by Rolla Selbak
A series about two on-again, off-again girlfriends who make a fake celebrity sex tape to catapult them into fame. In this episode, Jen and Mandy are being interviewed on Charlie Jennings about what it’s like to be part of the first ever lesbian sex tape. SF Bay Area Premiere.

A Valentine for Alice (3 min, 2009, USA) dir. by Amber Yada
This is a colorful and upbeat animated tribute to Alice Guy-Blache, one of cinema’s progenitors. An early experimenter in sound and color, she began her career in France, then moved to Ft. Lee, New Jersey, where she founded the Solax film studio. Many consider her film La Fee aux Choux to be the first fictional film. Her work was wildly popular and spanned many genres and themes, yet few of her 700+ (some say 1,000+) films survive. Oakland Premiere.
