A full conference pass is pricey, but there are free events happening all weekend long.

These great events will be at the Mark Hopkins Hotel during the San Francisco Writers Conference and we invite you to come check them out. Meet with representatives of companies offering writing related products and services.

Thursday, February 16

  • 10:30 am-noon @ California Room – Thriving in the Golden Age for Writers
    The 10 Commandments That Guarantee Your Success will be shared by Mike Larsen, SFWC Co-director. This session is just before the start of the SFWC, so no registration is needed.

Friday, February 17

  • 7-7:30 am @ Lobby – Green Tour of the Mark Hopkins
    Chief Engineer Shane Caldwell leads an insider’s tour of the Mark Hopkins—a green-certified, four-star hotel.
  • 1:45-2:45 pm @ Lobby – Creativity Walk
    Inspiration is all around you. Writer and conference photographer Melanie E. Rijkers will lead a walking photography workshop near the hotel. Learn how to see without judgment. Find inspiration by taking a fresh look at the world around you. Bring a smartphone or camera or take mind pictures. Open to attendee’s significant others.
  • 7:30 p.m. @ Peacock Ballroom – An Evening of Poetry & Jazz
    Join for an open mic with Diane Frank, Andy Jones, Richard Loranger, Mary Mackey, Susie Meserve, Jane Ormerod, Lissa Provost, attendees and the public. Music by Don Alberts, Barry Finnerty, and Alex Sack
  • 7:30 p.m. @ California Room – Writing the Resistance: Authors as Activists and Agents of Change
    2017 ushered in a time of great change, from the climate to human rights to the political landscape. Writers are at the vanguard of the new era of activism, speaking truth to power. This panel of literary leaders will share actions and inspiration for the resistance: Stephen Dinan, Jewelle Gomez, Susan Griffin, Alan Kaufman, Brend Knight, John Perkins, and David Talbot will discuss how writers can respond to the challenges facing the United States. Conference co-director Mike Larsen will moderate.

Saturday, February 18

  • 10-10:45 a.m. Use Your Imagination: Storytelling & Drawing
    Jon Agee, bestselling author/illustrator of the beloved books Terrific, The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau and Ludlow Laughs, will show how his books come to life for his young fans. After the talk, have books autographed by Jon, too. Geared to beginning readers, but all of Jon’s fans are encouraged to attend. Simon & Schuster is providing prizes.   • 6:30-7:30 p.m. Opening the Heart & Mind of the World: Opportunities for Writers of Color
