First day of the model boating season at Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park. This event includes the Tony Marshall Ragtop/Stinkpot Relay Regatta, a friendly relay competition that cleverly includes skippers and boats from the Power Squadron (“stinkpots”) and Radio-Control Sail Squadron and Freesail Squadron (“ragtops”).
The regatta will begin about 1:00 PM on the north side of Spreckels Lake. There will also be casual running of remote-control model steam-powered boats as well as other (electric) power and sail boats.
The boats are generally are less than six feet long; most are about 40 inches (“one-meter”).
They expect to run at least 5 teams of 5 boats in the relay, and many other members will be putting their boats on the lake. We expect that the historic Model Yacht Club building at 36th Avenue and JFK Drive will be open from about 11:00 to closing (undetermined time).
