If you want to truly feel the energy and spirit of Chinese New Year, you must come to San Francisco’s Chinatown. There is simply no other place like it. The moment you step onto the streets, you’re surrounded by the heartbeat of the celebration—vibrant colors, the sound of drums and firecrackers, the aroma of festive foods, and the excitement of families and visitors coming together.
San Francisco’s Chinatown is the oldest and most iconic Chinatown in the United States, and during Chinese New Year it becomes a living cultural stage. The traditions here aren’t just observed—they’re felt, heard, and experienced in a way that no online video or secondhand story can capture. The lion dances, the community rituals, the music, the blessings, the crowds, the joy—this is where the celebration comes alive.
If you want the real Chinese New Year experience, the one filled with history, culture, and unforgettable energy, then San Francisco’s Chinatown is the place you absolutely must be. It’s not just an event—it’s a once‑a‑year moment you’ll carry with you long after the festivities end.
The goal of the 4th Annual Chinese New Year Day Celebration – Community Fortune Walk on Grant Avenue is a vibrant tradition that brings together residents, visitors, and families to welcome the Lunar New Year in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Stretching along historic Grant Avenue, the celebration features joyful blessings, cultural performances, and the symbolic distribution of red envelopes to spread good fortune for the year ahead. This cherished event also serves as a living classroom for the younger generation, encouraging them to learn, honor, and remember this important day of the year. By passing down these customs, we ensure that the spirit of Chinese New Year—and the cultural heritage it represents—continues to thrive for generations to come.
This celebration will include lion dance, cultural performance, live music, live musical instruments, singing, and give away 1500 red envelopes to the general public with money and coupons inside the red envelopes. The coupons inside the red envelopes are sponsored by Chinatown merchants. The goal is to give a boost of business in Chinatown.
