Event Details

Join the 23RD ANNUAL POTRERO HILL HISTORY NIGHT, on Saturday, November 5 beginning at 5:30 pm. The free program, containing live music, interviews, and historic photos will take place from 5:30-9:30pm at St. Teresa’s Church and will cover 142 years of the church’s history in the neighborhood. No other organization has such a long history of bringing people together on Potrero Hill. Founded in 1880 and first located in Dogpatch in 1924, the church building was cut in two and each half dragged up the hill by pickup trucks and reassembled where it stands today. This changed what had been a predominantly Irish congregation to a predominantly Italian one. The church built a school and convent at 19th and Pennsylvania Ave in 1912. When the school building was undermined by freeway construction in the 1960s, a new open-plan school was built on Connecticut St. In the 1980s the church was the first in San Francisco to participate in the Sanctuary Movement, giving asylum to refugees fleeing political oppression in Central America.
